In recent years, provincial governments across Canada have recognized that the increase in obesity rates is causing a financial strain on Canada’s healthcare system. A report from Statistics Canada on adult body mass index revealed that in 2008, “17.2% of Canadians aged 18 or older, roughly 4.2 million adults, reported height and weight that classified them as obese.” Now, a number of governments are realizing that weight loss surgery is a beneficial method to reducing the strain. More Canadians are now turning to weight loss surgery as an effective method to treating obesity long term. The result is more provincial governments are covering the surgery costs when patients undergo the procedure by a recognized and accredited weight loss surgery facility.

Most provinces consider the surgical treatment of morbid obesity as an insured service under the publicly funded Medicare Act. Right now, Lap Band Surgery and Gastric Bypass Surgery are the only two weight loss procedures covered by insurance in Canada. As well, there are a few provinces that will only cover gastric bypass. Not every province covers the cost of lap band surgery and some provinces that do cover it will not cover the cost of the actual gastric band. As well, there are a few extended health insurance plans that may pay for part of the procedure with the other part being refunded as a tax deductible medical procedure. It is important to note that there are variations of what is covered in each province so it is important to check your home provincial health authority to find out coverage they provide.

When Medicare pays for weight loss surgery, the wait time can be quite long, sometimes several years or more. It normal to have a wait period of about 5-7 years for weight loss surgery in publicly funded hospitals across Canada. The Ministry of Health and Long Term Care of Ontario (through OHIP) will pay for gastric bypass surgery for Ontario patients at specific approved private weight loss facilities. Once approved by OHIP, patients can have the surgery within about 4 to 6 weeks. Although all provincial health insurance programs cover the costs of gastric bypass surgery, it is not always available in every province. Demand for the procedure is high in the public health system, so more private accredited weight loss clinics are being chosen.

Today, the obesity rates are increasing in Canada. When choosing weight loss surgery, expect to lose a lot of weight and keep it off. You will see your health and appearance drastically improve. Because of their success and minimal risks, more obese people in Canada are now choosing weight loss surgery when traditional diets and exercise programs have failed. When considering weight loss surgery it is important to discuss the benefits and risks with your physician and find out if you are a potential weight loss surgery candidate. It is also important to contact your provincial health authority and insurance provider to find out what coverage is provided if you elect to have the procedure.

Here is the scenario. You’ve purchased that fantastic bikini that you’ve been looking at for months on end. You’ve been invited to a wonderful beach party that is the perfect outing for displaying your brand new swimwear. You wear your unique and one-of-a-kind bikini to that fashionable function and you’re a total smash. You’re making the social rounds and mingling with new and exciting people that are so delighted to meet you too when all of a sudden you are accidentally bumped into and that hot dog with mustard that you’ve been holding, slips and falls all over your sexy bikini. Not to worry, because you were careful to bring a change of clothing for such mishaps. However, you just remembered you have another beach party to attend that you wanted to show off your new bikini and now it’s all stained. Here’s what you do:

Step 1: Instructions. Read and carefully follow any fabric care instructions that come with or are listed on your bikini wear. You don’t want to ruin it and use something that’s going to make the color fade or stain even more. Determine if you are going to hand wash or machine wash your bikini wear. Take in consideration the fabric, texture and ornaments, if any, that may be affected. Of course, hand washing delicates is the safest way of handling such items, although if you are confident that your fabric can withstand a washing machine, then going that way may be plausible.

Step 2: Stain Removers. Treat stains as soon as possible. Newer stains are easier to remove than older ones. Always test stain removers on an inside seam or hidden part of the garment for color fast issues. Never put chemical dry-cleaning solvents into the washer.

Don’t mix different stain removal products together. Some mixtures such as ammonia and bleach can discolor your swimwear. Always launder the washable items after using a stain remover to eliminate the residue of the product. Have patience, some stains take longer time to remove and multiple applications. Along with stain removers are pre-stain removers and they come in either liquid, stick or spray formula. Pay close attention to the type of fabric and read the instructions on the individual product for finding out which will work best for you.

Step 3: Water Temperature. Always use the safest water temperature for your fabric unless you have tested it and it bleeds. In that case, either use lukewarm water or cold water. Make sure the water is clean and sometimes you can add a pre-soaking agent to the water that you are going to hand wash your fabric in to aid cleaning. Refer to the Party Stains List below to select the proper water temperature with regard to a specific stain you would like to remove.

Step 4. Detergents. There are all purpose detergents that come in either liquid or powder form. Some are heavy-duty and some are fabric sensitive and/or hypoallergenic. It’s up to you to determine which is better fitted for you and your fabric. Again, pay attention to the fabric and ornaments on it. You want a detergent that will liquefy quickly enough so your bikini doesn’t have to sit a long time in the solution. Here are some tips on removing specific stains when choosing your detergent and water temperature.

Alcohol Stains: Launder with detergent in hottest water safest for the fabric. Do not use soap (bar, flake or detergents containing natural soap) since soap can make the stain permanent. Soak stains for 30 minutes in 1 teaspoonful of presoak product. If all the sugars are not removed, a brown stain will appear when the fabric is heated in the dryer or is ironed, as the sugar has caramelized.

Chocolate Stains: Treat the stain with a pre-wash spray or product containing enzymes. After pre-treating, then rub with a heavy-duty liquid detergent and launder. If the stain remains, then re-launder with bleach that is safe for the fabric.

Coffee & Tea Stains: Saturate the stain with a pre-treatment stain remover. Rub it with a heavy-duty liquid detergent then launder in hottest water safe for the fabric.

Blood Stains: Flush cold water through the stain and scrape off crusted material. Soak for about 15 minutes in a mixture of lukewarm water, 1/2 teaspoon liquid hand washing detergent and 1 tablespoon ammonia. Rub gently to loosen the stain and then launder. If the stain is not completely removed, wet the stain with hydrogen peroxide and a few drops of ammonia and leave on for no longer than 15 minutes.

Rinse with cool water.

Lipstick or Juice Stains (AKA: Dye Stains): Sponge area with dry-cleaning solvent. Rub with heavy-duty liquid detergent then launder. If needed, use an all-fabric bleach.

Step 4: Drying. If you’re the old fashioned type, then nothing works better than hanging something out to dry in the natural breeze. Although if you have no time for that, then using a cool to warm temperature when drying out your special fabric will be sufficient enough to keep it looking nice and new. Be wary of any kind of trinkets or beads that could easily be caught and torn from your swimwear.

Remember, your bikini wear will take care of you as long as you take care of it. Taking out a few moments after a day of swimming or sunbathing to properly wash and dry out your micro bikini will surely keep your most valuable piece of clothing in the best possible condition. Just remember that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure and with regard to swimwear, it’s worth a ton of cure.

Currently there are 10 million Americans in need of long term services and supports, and the number is expected to increase to near 15 million by 2020. A little known provision of the Health Reform Bill is the Community Living Assistance Services and Support (CLASS) Act is expected to help solve this problem.

It is a voluntary, federally administered, consumer-financed insurance plan. It became law when President Obama signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act on March 23, 2010. The CLASS plan provides those who participate with cash to help pay for needed assistance, if they become functionally limited, in a place they call home — from independent living to a nursing facility, if they choose.

In general, after signing up for the program, a participant will need to pay premiums for five years and be actively at work for three of these years before receiving benefits. So long as a person keeps paying premiums after the three years actively-at-work requirement is met, a person is still considered a CLASS Act plan participant.

The program will allow workers to have an average of roughly $150 or $240 a month, based on age and salary, automatically deducted from their paycheck to save for long-term care.

After the five-year vesting period, enrollees who need help bathing, eating or dressing will be eligible to take out benefits, estimated to be around $50-$75 a day for in-home care.

Supporters say the program will relieve pressure on Medicaid and should help keep us out of nursing homes by enabling Americans to save for something most will eventually need — assistance in eating, bathing or dressing in their old age.
How significant is this? A national Voluntary long term care program? Many say it will be more important and larger than Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs).

This will be additional “Self Funding” to help cover shortages. As many Americans they can’t rely on Social Security they need to make sure they can be taken care of in there later years.

What does it mean to the senior care industry? Well if only 5% of those 15,000,000 spoken about in the opening paragraph were to participate, in five years that would equate to 750,000 people. At $50.00 a day for 30 days a month would come to an additional $1.125 Billion dollars a MONTH to the home care industry in addition to the already projected growth.

That amount of money should help out many seniors and those that serve them.

Home treatment for scabies would not only help with the removal of scabies, but it can also prevent the infestation of scabies on the other parts of the body. The most important aspect to keep the scabies away is to adopt an appropriate hygiene.

To begin with, cut your nails regularly, so as to remove the possible mites or the eggs of mites hidden there. Wash the clothes, towels and other accessories of the infected individuals in hot water and must not be worn by anyone. In addition, the combs, hair accessories and brushes must be disinfected too. Every possible step must be taken, so as to kill the existence of mites. All the carpets and the furniture must be vacuumed regularly.

The treatment must be taken as prescribed and should not be consumed for longer periods of time for the reason that it can cause skin burnings and allergies. The itching caused due to scabies could be reduced with the help of antihistamine drugs such as Atarax, Benadryl, Phenergan and Zytrec. The doctor would sometimes prescribe lotions such as Elimite which contains permethrin, which is safe on children as well. Such a medication is safe for use on pregnant women as well. Antibiotic drug treatment must be followed since the skin can get infected due to the intense itching. The home remedies would prevent the scabies, however it would be ideal to consult the doctor as soon as you notice symptoms such as redness or blisters on the skin.

Just A Few Tools Are Needed To Take Care Of Your Teeth For A Lifetime

Health Articles | June 29, 2010

Everyone knows how easy it
is to take care of your teeth at home. It only takes a few basic tools and a
few minutes per day. If you want to protect yourself from the pain of losing your
teeth in the future, you can do so with a little daily discipline.

Everyone wants to look as
young and healthy for as long as possible, and that is what fuels the
multi-billion dollar anti-aging industry. A pretty face and a beautiful smile
project a youthful appearance. Skin rejuvenation and plastic surgery is very
expensive; however, taking care of your teeth is inexpensive and easy to do
yourself.

Most Americans think of a
toothbrush as their main weapon in the war against tooth decay because that is
what they have been taught since elementary school. It doesn’t matter whether
it is a manual toothbrush, a battery operated toothbrush, or an electric
toothbrush; what matters is that you use it. However, many people forget the
downside of using a toothbrush – the bristles are a breeding ground for
bacteria.

To avoid bacteria growing on
your toothbrush, follow some simple rules. Never share your toothbrush –
whether it is with your spouse or a one-time visitor. Always utilize a UV
sanitizer after each brushing. If you don’t have a sanitizing unit, clean the
brush thoroughly by holding it under running water for at least twenty seconds.
Then allow the bristles to air dry – don’t throw the wet toothbrush in a dark
drawer or stick it in a fancy case. Also, don’t store it near an open toilet. Buy
a new brush every two months, and after every bout of sickness or if you drop
it on the bathroom floor.

An alternative to using a
toothbrush is now being recommended by many dentists. Oral
irrigators, also known as water flossers, shoot out a concentrated stream of
water to remove food debris and bacteria from between the teeth that brushing
and flossing don’t reach. Dental hygienists recommend oral irrigation to
stimulate gum tissue as well as remove plaque.

Most everyone uses a
toothpaste or mouth rinse in conjunction with his or her toothbrush or water
flosser. Toothpastes and rinses now give you many choices besides just aiding
the cleaning of your tooth. They can help whiten your teeth, freshen your
breath, prevent gingivitis (gum disease), control your tartar, and promote
stronger tooth enamel. One ingredient you should make sure they contain is
Fluoride, a supplement to strength your teeth. Another ingredient to look for
is Triclosan. It kills bacteria.

If you don’t use a water
flosser, than you should use dental floss to assist in keeping your teeth clean
and your gums healthy. Again, there is a variety of choices on the market from
which you can choose – the differences mainly being how easy they are to use.
You can buy waxed or non-waxed, thick or thin, roped, and flavored. You can
even buy a plastic holder to make flossing easier, or pre-strung plastic
holders that you simply throw away after using.

Some people use a plastic or
wooden toothpick to clean food from between their teeth. Dentists do not
recommend this because you can easily damage the gum between your teeth.

While don’t have to spend a
lot of money for the basic tools you will need for taking care of your teeth, you should still visit your dentist at least twice a year for a general checkup. An x-ray
can spot a cavity before it develops into a major problem<img src="http://www.articlesfactory.com/pic/x.gif" alt="Free Web Content" border="0", and a thorough teeth cleaning at the dentist is great for helping to prevent tooth decay and gum disease.

<img src="http://www.buzzle.com/img/articleImages/61615-50med.jpg" width="315" height="472" alt="How To Care For Your Swimsuit" class="ImgBorder"

With the average cost of a new swimsuit rising higher each year, a woman’s worst nightmare is spending a week’s salary on an expensive, designer swimsuit and then watching in despair as that beautiful bikini very quickly succumbs to wear and tear. While the eventual demise of most swimwear is something of a moot point (no fabric can hold up against chlorine forever), there are simple measures you can take to greatly lengthen the overall lifetime of your swimsuit.

First of all, when buying a swimsuit, make sure that the fabric has been treated for chlorine resistance. You may access this information from either the manufacturer of your swimsuit or the store salesperson. Also, try shopping at a swimwear boutique or other small store to ensure that you are speaking with knowledgeable salespeople.

Secondly, when you do go swimming in your new swimsuit, shower immediately after exiting the pool. While lounging on the poolside in your swimsuit is certainly a relaxing experience, the chlorine from the pool water will very quickly impregnate the fabric in the heat of the sun. Try showering first and then lounging to dry off. This action will also serve the added benefit of quickly removing chlorine that could irritate your skin and hair.

Next, when lounging at the poolside, be careful where you sit. Lycra fabric, a major component of almost all swimsuits, can snag and fray if caught on a wooden lounger. Be sure to sit and rise slowly to catch any snags before they become a major problem.

Then, once you are finished with your swimsuit for the day, be sure to rinse it out in cold water before throwing it in the laundry. A cold-water rinse will remove most of the chlorine that could degrade the fabric.

Finally, wash your swimsuit in cold water on the gentle cycle in your washing machine and never place it in the dryer. As most women well know, the dryer has a tendency to quickly ruin delicate clothing. Allowing the swimsuit to air dry will prevent any fraying or fading that could occur in the dryer.

As a final note, try to look for quality, well-made swimsuits in classic styles when shopping. The last thing you want to do is take diligent care of your swimsuit and then be unable to wear it the next season because it has gone out of style. Rather than blindly purchasing every passing swimsuit trend that appears on the fashion runway, try investing in a classic maillot or bikini and then spicing it up with trendy accessories. This will save you some unnecessary embarrassment and your budget some unnecessary stretching.

With these tips in mind, you should be able to significantly lengthen the lifetime of your swimsuit. Now, rather than spending cash on a new swimsuit, you can save your hard-earned money for some fun vacation destinations to wear your beautiful, well-kept bikini or swimsuit!

With a new health care overhaul bill passed and the president moving onto the campaign trail to convince the country that it’s the right move, opponents of the legislation are lining up throughout the U.S. to mount one final stand against the bill. Senate Republicans are planning to keep a companion bill from reaching the president via parliamentary moves, while legislators in at least 30 states are working against the bill, noting that it is unconstitutional to force Americans to have health insurance. While experts predict that none of these moves will work, they do admit that it will keep the issue firmly in the public’s mind all the way until the next set of elections.

Said Mark Hall, professor of law and public health at Wake Forest University, “I am surprised by the mobilization of the states. It does strike me as a kind of civil disobedience, a declaration that we’re not going to follow the law of the land. It doesn’t make sense. The federal Constitution couldn’t be any clearer that federal law is supreme.” No matter, as the vitriol that was reserved for Democrats and their bill during debate is now heating up to a whole new level.

On Monday, at least nine state attorneys general were already moving to file suit against the federal government as soon as the bill was signed. Those states included Alabama, Florida, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Michigan, Nebraska and Washington. Already Virginia and Idaho have passed legislation that would block the bill’s insurance requirement from taking effect in those states. Summing up the fury quite effectively, Brian Gottstein, a spokesman for Republican Virginia attorney general Kenneth Cuccinelli, “Just by virtue of being a resident of the United States, never before in history have we been required to purchase something.”

The Logan Basic technique is a very low force treatment that some chiropractors use. It involves the muscular structure that surrounds the sacrum and is used as a lever system. The doctor puts a light pressure on a leverage spot on the sacral bone while the patient is in a face down position. He holds the pressure for a few minutes as he uses the other hand to rub the back muscles to release tension. This causes the entire spine to move toward balance. The light pressure allows the muscles to relax. This is a very gentle treatment but it’s extremely effective.

An examination is given to a patient before the Logan Basic technique is administered. This is usually done while the patients in a standing and lying position. The examination includes a weight bearing postural analysis which looks at the structural landmarks of the body. This gives significant information to the doctor. Full spine A-P and lateral x-rays may also be taken. Patients that are very large or tall usually aren’t candidates for full spine x-rays because it’s difficult to get a good image. All parts of the x-ray film need to be of diagnostic quality so the doctor can read it accurately.

Fatigue poisons or build up chemicals in the body can cause severe exhaustion. The Logan Basic technique releases these poisons by relaxing the muscles. This treatment may be an effective treatment for eliminating headaches, fatigue, insomnia, digestive problems, mood swings, sinus and allergy problems. It works well for low back and pelvic alignments. Patients with osteoporosis can be treated with this method because of its low force adjustments. The low force also makes it an ideal and gentle treatment for infants, children and the elderly.

Logan Basic technique is often used successfully to treat women during their entire pregnancy and labor. Pregnant women may experience uncomfortable symptoms such as tightness and pain in their hips and lumbar and gluteal muscles. This treatment can reduce some symptoms and help the pelvic function correctly. The table used to give the treatment is a high-low table which is very comfortable and safe. Procedures that are used include piriformis contact, sacral unlock and the main contact called apex. The apex contact is meant to establish proper sacral alignment. Perineal contact is used starting at the fifth month to improve muscle tone in the pelvic muscles which helps with a healthy delivery. Doctors may need to get verbal and written permission before using the perineal contact.

The Logan Basic technique involves analyzing the spine and its biomechanics in normalcy and with problems that are caused by sacral subluxations. Biomechanics means studying the stability, motion and deformation of the spine/ it’s learning about various spine disorders and the best way to treat them. Dr. Logan, the inventor of this technique, stated that since the spine rests on the sacrum, it could obstruct the stabilization of spinal subluxations if the sacrum were unleveled or subluxated. This gentle but powerful treatment has helped many people find pain relief and correction of postural distortions.

Do You Know the Foot Care Rules for Diabetics?

More and more patients like yourself are learning and implementing the foot care rules for diabetics in their life. While they almost seem too simple to be true, these easy lifestyle changes will protect your feet from infection and harm, while also protecting the rest of your body from potential illness and your feet from the need for amputation. If this sounds scary to you, it should. Diabetes is a condition that’s serious – and that’s why you need to follow these basic foot care rules for diabetics.

Washing Up for Health

The easiest way to care for your feet is to make sure you are washing each foot thoroughly with warm water and soap each and every day. This will help you get rid of any germs and bacteria, while also helping you to remove any dirt or other particles that might have found a home on your feet. Make sure to wash between each toe carefully and wash the tops and the bottoms as well as the sides and ankles. By choosing a routine and a plan which works for you, this task will become a soothing part of your day. You can choose to wash your feet in the morning or the evening, though many people choose the evening as that tends to be when your feet feel the dirtiest and most in need of the washing. Right before bed, simply wash your feet and then follow the next important of the foot care rules for diabetics.

Check, Check, and Recheck

In terms of the foot care rules for diabetics, this is the more important of all – check your feet. It should go without saying, but you need to examine your feet on a daily basis to make sure there are no cuts, bruises, or other changes to the skin on your feet. You can perform this check after you wash your feet as you will already be focusing on your feet, plus you can get two tasks done at the same time. You should also be checking your feet after exercise and after any walking or other task that puts strain on your feet atl all.

Maintain Your Skin and Nails

If you can reach your feet, make sure you are trimming your toenails often to prevent potential scratches and hangnails. While these are minor inconveniences to most people, they can turn into serious infections for you. If you can’t reach your feet, make sure to have someone trim your nails on a regular basis or go a podiatrist to help you with thicker nails. In addition, you need to care for the skin of your feet to make sure things stay clean and infection-free. You will want to apply lotion to keep the foot moistened and in good condition as a part of these foot care rules for diabetics. Skin that cracks is also prone to infection, after all. In addition, you want to have calluses and corns removed by a professional to make sure that you’re not providing a happy environment for bacteria and fungus.

Dental care is one of the most important things that we can do for ourselves to help endure a happy and healthy life. The problem is that getting effective dental care is often something that is out of reach of every one due to the limitation of funds. Dental care is not cheap and insurance, when it does cover it, can be confusing and complicated.

Today more and more people are looking for ways to cut their expenses and save money on things like dental care. One of the ways that you can do that is to use some basic dental care tips at home. This will help to reduce the amount that you have to spend on dental visits for you and your family annually

Make sure that you know the correct way to brush your teeth and that you are brushing regularly. It is estimated that over 60% of Americans do not know the proper way to brush and that over half of Americans are not brushing as often as they should. The simple act of brushing and doing so correctly is able to reduce the amount of expense you must put out for dental care by as much as half.

When you eat spicy food or foods that are high in acid content you are putting your mouth in danger. Capsicum, the oil in spicy foods that give them their heat is able to break down the tissues of the gum line and weaken the supporting structures of teeth this means that they can be more easily loosened. Acid can weaken enamel and help lead to cavities. You can reduce these issues by always rinsing your mouth after eating with clean, cool water and making sure that you include baking soda in your brushing routine to neutralize acids.

A pre-brushing rise is a great addition to your brushing routine. These rinses can help to break up the plagues that occur on teeth and the gums and rinse it away. This makes brushing easier and more effective and reduces the risk of disease that can be caused by plague.

Choose the right mouthwash. This is a very important aspect of dental care. Many people are not aware of the fact that the choice of mouthwash that they use can actual do more harm than good. This is due to the fact that many mouth wash products are incredibly high in alcohol and that can weakened gums and damage enamel. Also know that not all mouthwashes are created equal. Many do not contain antibacterial ingredients and therefore do not to help prevent gum disease and mouth infections.

Picking and flossing of your teeth is very important to keeping them healthy. Dentist agrees that if people were more conscious of flossing and picking their teeth they could reduce their annual visits by as much as 30%. This process is wonderful for removing debris that brushing may miss and to remove germs and bacteria that can lead to infection.

Lastly make sure that you are massaging your gums on a regular basis. You can pick up a gum massager at a drug store for a few bucks, instructions are included and it takes only a few minutes to learn. Doing this three times a week will reduce the amount of work that you need when you visit the dentist by increasing the blood flow to your gums and therefore helping to keep teeth healthier.

Dental care is a lifelong commitment to not only a great smile but a healthy mouth. Take the time to employ thee tips and you will not only have a healthier more vibrant smile but a great reduction in your dental care expense.
