A lot of us are aware of rising food costs and if you are on a low income or you have a large family, this can make cooking a healthy, interesting dinner every night a bit like a juggling act.

A lot of foods are more expensive than ever, including staples such as beef, chicken, milk, and butter. There are various reasons for these price increases. The rising energy costs mean that food is more expensive to process and to deliver to retail outlets so the end price reflects this.

A lot of countries have better living standards than they had previously, including China and India, and these countries are importing more of our produce. Ethanol is more expensive and is used to grow produce such as corn, soybeans, wheat, barley, and oats, making the prices of those go up too. Sometimes there seems to be no food cost control because there seems to be no end to the price increases.

Animals eat grains so the price of beef, chicken and more is on the up because the animal has cost more to feed. Grains such as corn and oats are used in breakfast cereals so these now cost more and so does the milk to pour over it!

How to Make Your Money Go Further

If you are low on money but still want to give your family high quality, nutritious meals, there are a few things you can do. First of all, why not plan the week’s meals ahead of time and shop for all the ingredients? Try to include plenty of grains and fresh produce because these are nutritious and filling.

Chicken has always been economical and you can make a tasty meal like fried chicken, corn on the cob and potato salad very cheaply. Chicken is actually very versatile to cook with and you can make all kinds of sauces to go with it as well as cooking it in different ways, such as grilling, frying, baking, poaching and more.

If you have ever read the history of Kentucky Fried Chicken you will know they started very small but managed to transform cheap ingredients into delicious meals. You can do the same and made KFC style recipes for the family. This is certainly cheaper than taking them out for fast food and fried chicken is very simple to make. For a healthier twist, oven fried chicken tastes just like deep fried chicken but is lower in both fat and calories.

Vary What You Eat

Easy and healthy meals like stir-fry do not use big pieces of chicken or meat, so they work out cheaper than meals where you have a full piece of meat or fish per person. You might want to have a simple pasta or rice dish four times a week and something meatier the other nights. This is a better solution than “feast and famine” where you eat like kings for a few weeks then realize you only have enough money for cans of baked beans for the rest of the month.

Homemade food is healthier and cheaper than eating out or buying prepackaged food or TV dinners. Making your own meals means you know what ingredients your family is consuming and you can tweak the recipes to suit their individual tastes or make double and freeze it, to save having to cook another night.

It isn’t often that senior politicians vow to transform themselves into lightweights. But two Japanese health vice-ministers hope to do just that from today with the launch of a weblog documenting their efforts to fight the flab.

Keizo Takemi and Noritoshi Ishida, both 55, have vowed to lose 5kg (11lb) and 6kg respectively over the next six months to encourage others to lead healthier lifestyles, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported yesterday.

The pair will post online updates of their personal battles of the bulge, including their weight and waist measurement, and records of the number of steps they take each day. They have also agreed to post photographs of their bellies to ensure there is no politically motivated massaging of their vital statistics.

Despite their nation’s famed longevity and low-fat traditional diet, a record number of Japanese are struggling with their weight. Experts believe an estimated 20 million Japanese have, or are at risk of developing, metabolic syndrome, a series of symptoms that includes high cholesterol and a flabby belly.

The rise in the number of sufferers has been blamed on the spread of western fast food and an increasingly sedentary lifestyle. If left unattended, the syndrome can lead to more serious ailments, such as strokes and heart attacks.

Mr Takemi clearly has his work cut out. Weighing 84kg (13st 3lb), he is just 1.66 metres (5ft 5in) tall and has a 100.5cm (39½in) waist. He put his “stocky” appearance down to his days as a rugby player, but admitted putting on about 20kg since his youth.

The politician agreed that he had taken a huge gamble by publicly vowing to lose weight. “Considering my position as vice minister of health, I felt I had to do something about it,” he said. “I can’t run or hide any more.”

He may also come to regret agreeing to disclose his alcohol intake just as Japan enters its boozy end-of-year party season.

For most people, the start of the summer is a happy event. There will be pool parties, barbecues, and many trips to amusement parks. But for our beloved pets, facing rising temperatures without precautionary measures in place could lead to premature death, one that could be avoided.

Our pets are just as eager for some fun in the sun but just like for humans, we must remember to take some careful measures to ensure they can withstand the summer heat to avoid a host of other potential problems. Below are some life-saving tips:

Beware Of Lawns:

Neighboring lawns or large fields at parks should be one of the biggest concerns for pet owners, especially dog owners. The reason for this is due to pesticides, fertilizers, and insecticides being used by many homeowners to protect their lawns when warm weather arrives.

Plants:

There are certain plants and flowers, if ingested can be quite harmful to pets. As reported by the Humane Society of the United States, more than 700 plants has been named as producing toxic substances that can be harmful to animals.

You may even have some of them in your very own backyard such as apple trees (seeds can be harmful to an animal’s health) and holy shrubs (berries fall into the poisonous category). Although it may be impossible, as a pet owner, to avoid lawns entirely, be very mindful of the surrounding whenever you and your pet are out taking a stroll around the neighborhood.

Certain Temperatures Must Be Avoided:

It’s only natural to want to take your pet along with you on routine errands once the warm weather returns. Taking car trips to the supermarket and the post office may seem relatively harmless but, in fact, it can turn into a very dangerous situation for your pet.

It doesn’t take long for cars to heat up even when parked in the shade. The temperature inside a car can reach 120 F in a matter of minutes, as this is common on a hot day. Pet owners will more than likely have the air conditioning on while they’re driving – the AC is typically turned off once getting out of the car.

This leaves pets to sit in what rapidly becomes sweltering heat. The consequences are many: heat stroke, heat exhaustion, and even brain damage can occur. The safest route to take is to, in general, during summer months, to leave your pet at home as you go out to run errands.

Heart Worm Protection/Symptoms Of Dog Worms:

During the winter, many pet owners stop giving their pets heartworm medication. You will find that most veterinarians are accepting of this because heartworm is transmitted through mosquitoes, which aren’t present during the colder months.

A dry cough can sometimes be a sign of heartworm. Other worms might cause a decrease in weight or difficulty in gaining weight. Be sure to check your pet’s stool as it may also contain worms as well.

Pet owners should resume giving their pets the heartworm medication again once the weather heats up. The reason for this is because heartworm is a blood disease that can be very painful for pets. At the point of infection, the heartworm lava can grow and turn into worms, which then live in the blood vessels surrounding the heart and lungs.

What comes next is the adult worms begin to mate and circulate throughout an animal’s bloodstream. Since the cost of prevention is relatively low, many veterinarians are amazed at the prevalence of heartworm. Although heartworm is indeed treatable once an animal has been infected, such treatment can be excruciatingly painful for the animal.

But there is good news: This fate can be avoided. How? By simply giving your pet – although heartworm is most commonly transmitted to dogs, it can infect cats, too – heartworm medication long before the start of spring. To be on the safe side, continue the medication all year round.

The responsible pet owner will be careful to take mental notes of how much activity their pet can handle in warmer weather. Dogs with thick coats, short-nosed dogs, and senior dogs generally experience great difficulty handling a lot of activity as they normally do in other seasons.

This of course, is not a license for them not to exercise, but pet owners should be very mindful about when these types of pets get their exercise. The best times would be early morning or evening hours because the temperature is at its’ coolest.

Avoid Summer Carnivals/Fairs With Pets:

For many pets, heat can cause them a great deal of stress. And if you add on the mixture of large crowds and loud noises, this can cause your pets to suffer from anxiety.

To be on the safe side, it is generally a good idea to leave pets in the home when attending such gatherings and this includes celebrations such as: Fourth of July fireworks as this can trigger anxiety in pets and should be avoided.

It is no secret that obesity in rising rapidly in many western countries and that the United States is leading the field but what is perhaps not so well known is that the number of those people classed as severely or morbidly obese is growing at twice the rate of obesity in general.

Today more than 30 percent of Americans are overweight with a body mass index (BMI) of between 25 and 29 and another 30 percent are classed as obese with a BMI in excess 30. That means that more than 60 percent of the population of the United States is now classed as being either overweight or obese. This is worrying enough in itself, but the underlying numbers show an even more worrying picture.

Between 2000 and 2005 the proportion of those people classed as being obese with a BMI of greater than 30 rose by just under 25 percent. However, the proportion of those classed as being severely or morbidly obese rose by 50 percent in the same period and the proportion of those often referred to as being ’super’ obese with a BMI in excess of 50 rose by a staggering 75 percent.

At the same time there has been an explosive growth in the number of bariatric surgeries being performed in the United States. In 1998 bariatric surgery was performed on about 13,000 patients and, by 2006, this figure had risen to more than 200,000.

Today bariatric surgery is being performed in more and more hospitals and surgical centers and, in addition to tradition surgeries such as vertical or sleeve gastrectomy and the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, now encompasses a range of new techniques including such operations as laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding and even robotic gastric surgery. But, despite all of this, morbid obesity continues to rise and now appears to be virtually out of control.

With the well know and often fatal health risks of such things as diabetes and heart disease accompanying obesity one begins to wonder just what it is going to take to stem this rising tide.

GastricBypassFacts.info is a substantial resource center providing information on all aspects of gastric bypass surgery and includes a number of articles covering such things as morbid obesity.
